Curiosities of the Niagara River

Niagara River

Niagara is the name given to an extensive river with 56 km of course and which unites in border terms the United States with Canada (specifically the state of New York and the province of Ontario).

In its extension, the Niagara River includes the famous Niagara Falls. In addition, from the north, the river connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. Remember, these natural wonders together represent the highest flow of water in North America.

The Niagara River is of great importance and is part of the St. Lawrence River system, known for integrating a succession of rivers (6 in total) and lakes (5 in total) in its course, and which in turn are part of the Great Lakes waterway.

A curious fact about this natural wonder is that its water flow is controlled according to the season of the year by an International Agreement signed in 1950 between the two geographically linked nations, in order to correctly distribute the uses of water, while maintaining the natural beauty of the place.

In this regard, it is important to note that, without this action, the water levels of the Niagara River would rise up to 5 meters, generating as a consequence the increase of the erosion of the ecosystem and that would end up displacing the emblematic waterfalls located in this place.
